Summer '18 Nielsen #'s are out for Grand Rapids (radio)

Good news for WLAV; its tower move debacle produced little to no discernible negative impact to its summer '18 ratings. Even better news for sister station 94.5 Gnash-FM - it scored one of its best books in years. Perhaps B93's steady diet of "bro country" songs has persuaded some Country listeners ...

Looks like WRIF is playing some Mike Clark tidbits occasionally between songs.

Glad the station is honoring him!

Wow. Too bad. Seemed like a very good dude. Sick sense of humor but a heart of gold.

Smoking is a stupid habit. He left us too soon.

Trump deserves major credit for the USMC trade pact

This is a much stronger, more comprehensive agreement than NAFTA, includes several new provisions designed to protect U.S. labor & manufacturing interests (while ensuring a fairer wage for Mexican labor), includes a number of new protections for holders of intellectual property, and includes a numbe...

Re: MSU's football team might be better than many of us thought

"Pathetic" is a little harsh to describe Northwestern. Mediocre? Inconsistent? Sure. But there are far worse teams in the Big Ten. MSU's offense often looks skimpy the first several games of each season; then at some point it's as if someone flipped a switch & they look like a completely different s...

Re: All 3 statewide ballot proposals should be voted down

It's not impossible, but it's a far-fetched possibility. I've always viewed the Secretary of State's office as being rather apolitical, despite its office holders being nominated by the major parties and appearing on the partisan ballot. I cannot recall any recent example (i.e. within the last 20 ye...

Re: WHNN flips to Adult Contemporary; Burke is dismissed

Regarding WFBE (Gnash FM - 95.1), nearly two weeks ago while driving through the region, their audio processing actually sounded superb. Dynamic range was terrific and modulation levels were precisely where they needed to be. It was the first time in YEARS the station sounded good aurally, and that ...

Re: All 3 statewide ballot proposals should be voted down

I don't understand your comment.

The lobbyists who control the process now are unelected, corrupt and operate secretively.

Yes, if Prop 2 passes, the board's work will indeed be completely transparent. It would be required by law to be that way.

Re: Windows 10 - Your Thoughts?

I think a key reason the adoption rate for Windows 10 was vastly more successful than that of Windows 8 is two-fold: -The return of the "Start" menu, albeit in modified form. -Windows pushing notifications out to all Windows 7 & 8 users (and perhaps others?) on a very frequent basis urging them to u...

Re: All 3 statewide ballot proposals should be voted down

So, you like the current system better? To each their own, I guess. If the Secretary of State were to manipulate the process, that individual would be in clear violation of the law, and there is a high likelihood such manipulation would be exposed since each & every meeting would be required under t...

Re: Gubernatorial debate feedback (Oct. 12)

Few people are going to watch an hour long debate on a tiny smartphone screen. At minimum, WDIV could've televised it on 4.2 or 4.3. WDIV really did a disservice to the voting public. I hope future campaigns omit WDIV from future debate participation; they evidently do not seem to take their public ...

Re: All 3 statewide ballot proposals should be voted down

The Mackinac Center - a think-tank whose analysis I generally respect and often (but not always) agree with - has made no recommendation with regard to Proposal 2. Instead, it offers a policy paper offering an equal number of arguments both for and against the proposal. https://www.mackinac.org/arch...

It's now WQAN, which is simulcasting 100.3 WQON. :)

Odd that the signal is strong in TC but is entirely unreceivable in your location. I wonder if they are using a temporary site much closer to T.C. ? Or perhaps the antenna system is malfunctioning?

Re: All 3 statewide ballot proposals should be voted down

Updating my earlier post: - I am now leaning toward a "No" on Prop 1. - Definite "Yes" on Prop 2. The opposition has yet to mount a single reasonable argument as to how the proposed law would fail to reduce bias in the re-districting process. The evidence that gerrymandering is happening under the c...

Re: Election Day predictions thread

That is very good food for thought, Audiophile. I honestly overlooked that potential implication. I am going to do more research on that aspect. If I conclude insurance rates will indeed climb substantially, I will be switching my vote on Prop 1 to "No." By the way, here in the Detroit market, I've ...

Re: WLAV's failed tower move to Butterworth dump site, and now - the aftermath!

Correct. That tower is no longer there. Sometime in the mid 90s I think, AM 1480 moved to its current site at the NE corner of 68th St and Kalamazoo Ave in Gaines Township. The nighttime signal is highly directional for 1480. If you live north of the site, the signal is scorching. If you live more t...

Re: How did old school Cable Boxes work?

I stayed at a hotel on a high school trip where the pay-per-view channels were blocked via a simple trap that sat on the coax line between the set-top box and the TV set. We figured out that if we removed the device and plugged the opposite end of the coax that traveled from the set-up box directly ...
